Abstract :
A family of matched and codesigned chips that work together with hardly any extra glue logic and allow the straightforward and easy design of a SPARC compatible workstation is described. This eight member chipset is a complete solution to a SPARC workstation. Integration of most of the glue logic enables system manufacturers to only need to add memory chips and a few standard off the shelf parts like SCSI controllers and serial ports. The SPARC workstation compatible schematic, the 8.5×11-in board layout, the necessary drivers, and a Sun OS port are described. The SparKIT chips are: L64811 IV (SPARC integer unit); L64814 FPU (floating point unit); L64815 MCT (memory management unit, cache controller, Cache tag unit and MBus interface); L64850 DMC, (dynamic memory controller), L64852 M25 (MBus to SBus controller); L64853A SBDMA+ (SBus direct virtual memory access controller plus); and L64855 SBus graphics (SBus video frame buffer chip)
