Abstract
The authors describe the performance of a new range of D-size diameter nickel-cadmium sealed cells, the Super-TDQ cells. The authors report the cycling capability and the electrical performance of Super-TDQ cells at several discharge and charge currents. The advantages of the end-of-charge sensing methods for quick charging are discussed. The internal oxygen pressure developed in the cell during charging and its decay rate when the charge current is turned off are presented for negative electrodes both with and without a catalyst coating. The cells combine high energy density, in excess of 120 Wh/liter, with a one-hour charging capability. The high energy density, e.g., 5.2 Ah for the D-size cell, is achieved by combining a high energy density negative electrode produced by electrodeposition (ED), with an improved sintered positive electrode
