Abstract
The signature file access method has, in recent years, received a great deal of attention as a storage structure suitable for associative retrieval from files in various applications. Even though the basic idea is simple, several implementation methods have been suggested, each offering certain advantages in special cases. A survey is made of the methods and how they can be used for multimedia data. The main contribution is a guide that can be used to select effective implementations for specific applications. The decision-making process is explained with examples
