Abstract
This paper reports on the novel application of the Balanced Model Truncation (BMT) technique to speech coding. Starting from a source-filter model of speech, we expose the use of BMT in coding the filter parameters, following the separation of speech from the excitation via homomorphic deconvolution. BMT fundamentals, details of a BMT driven speech coder, including related subsidiary improvements, together with some listening tests and comparisons are presented
