Abstract
The author considers the idea of entering a metric in the rule space of knowledge bases. The metric allows, on the basis of a strong taxonomy, a sound mathematical apparatus and search strategies to be included in the rule handling. The relevance of the rule in a given context is directly evaluated through the distance from a given point to a fixed compact set. Dynamic conflict resolution strategies and rule population formation and evaluation are considered on the basis of the metrics. The implementation of this approach in the context of an expert-systems building tool is discussed
