Abstract
In this paper we deal with the design procedures for the magnetic bearings that might be applied for the high speed machinery and flywheel energy storage systems. The magnetic bearing system has two different types of rotor: one is for the inner rotor type and the other is for the outer rotor type. There are several constraints that should be considered for the design of the magnetic bearings, which are the attractive force, the space to be applied, controls etc. In this study based on the assumptions that the space to be applied is arbitrarily decided, the design procedures for the inner rotor or outer rotor types suspended by the magnetic bearings are presented and show the effectiveness of the design procedures by using the finite element method.
