  • Abstract
In fault diagnoses, situations such as abnormal behaviour and symptoms of equipment and instruments are recognized. Real-time situation recognition would realize the advanced maintenance of industrial equipment and instruments. The authors explain how to specify the structured knowledge description for real-time situation recognition. Complexity and modularity which are the difficulties in knowledge description are explained. Data abstractions are applied to avoid the excess of information. An abstract-data-type mechanism is applied to represent concepts, relations, and situations. Modules which have autonomy and communication mechanisms are proposed as cooperative computational units. A language which grounds the modules and contains specialized mechanisms for real-time situation recognition is also explained.<>
