Abstract :
A new methodology for determining the dynamic thermal rating of overhead transmission and distribution lines is described. This includes using a simple monitor and a calculation algorithm based on the tested and widely accepted IEEE 738 standard. The monitor, called the thermal rate monitor, consists of a conductor replica, which does not require physical contact with the line itself. Determining the actual rating of overhead lines allows the transfer of more power while still operating safely. This new technology is a low-cost way for electric utilities to uprate power lines, while avoiding expensive physical modification or rebuilding of the lines. The new monitor and method of calculation described in this paper have advantages over the existing technology including accuracy, ease of installation, low cost, and durability.
