Abstract
A new transformer-less power electronics control device, the multimode static series compensator (MSSC) is presented herein. The MSSC is based on advancements in voltage sourced converter (VSC) design and control technologies-allowing for design flexibility, high reliability, and economic functionality. The MSSC is capable of controlling the power flow of not only transmission lines but also distribution lines during steady state conditions and providing dynamic voltage compensation and short circuit current limitation during system disturbances. Example applications to which the MSSC can be applied are presented in addition to a comparison to dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) technology.
