Abstract :
The origins of the impending phase-outs of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are traced, and the changes in regulations which have accompanied this transition are described. A brief description of the atmospheric science is followed by updates of the Amendments of the Montreal Protocol and the US Clean Air Act. The chemical, air conditioning, and refrigeration industries have worked to identify alternative refrigerants and provide equipment which can use them and their associated lubricants. A brief description of the choices available is followed by an industry overview of the challenge faced and the work done to surmount these challenges
