Abstract
The history and present status of MILSATCOM systems are briefly reviewed, and the problems and issues are addressed from the architectural point of view. Current technology activities are discussed as well as the need for additional developments in both the space and ground segments. The key drivers are: uncertainty in future geopolitical developments with strong effects on requirements and threats, anticipated budget cuts, and the need for flexibility in implementing programs and deploying new systems
