Abstract
Summary form only given. Fiber Raman lasers are of great interest for applications in optical communications. To date such lasers have been demonstrated in Fabry-Perot configurations where feedback is provided by mirrors located at the ends of the Raman-active fiber medium. We propose and analyze for the first time a distributed-feedback fiber Raman laser and show that such a laser is feasible with current fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology. Because the threshold gain of a DFB Raman laser scales inversely as the length cubed, the recent availability of FBG´s with lengths of order 1 m should enable the operation of such lasers with standard CW pump sources.
