Abstract :
Summary form only given. A comparative study of large mode holey and conventional fibres demonstrates that holey fibres are a versatile alternative to large mode conventional fibres, particularly for broadband applications where the added benefit of endless single mode guidance is valuable. Bend losses in these fibres are comparable with conventional fibres, with the added advantage that the bend loss can be modified via the holey fibre geometry.
