Abstract
The model of economic integration of design proposed by Kim and Cho possesses advantages of less bias and lower cost than traditional methods. But this method does not design for manufacturability. Process capability analysis has proven in practice to be a very valuable engineering decision tool. So process capability index (PCI) is introduced to improve the model. The methodology is illustrated with a successful application to the design of polyamide resin, and comparative study is done with MATLAB software. The results show that the improved approach with PCI provides more flexibility for designing for manufacturability. Adjustment of tolerance should be made after variation effect is sufficiently reduced. The robustness of response can be improved with a significant amount of total cost savings.
