Abstract :
The authors present the key aspects of the first application of the generic network element memory administration (NEMA) interface for digital crossconnect systems (DCs). They focus on those portions of the memories embedded in an NE that can be accessed and controlled through the operations interface (i.e. the NE database). DSO crossconnects, conference establishment, and conference crossconnects are considered as DCS-specific NEMA applications. It is concluded that the first application of generic NEMA provides the opportunity for DCS suppliers to produce the DCs that fit into the operations architecture that is planned by BellSouth; the means to efficiently accommodate a multisupplier environment; the means to control the future network; and the necessary foundation that will make it easier for other DCSs (as well as other NE types) to meet the generic NEMA interface.<>
