  • Abstract
    A novel high-efficiency compact optical coupler employing curved gratings with non-uniform pitches is proposed to coupling light off or into silicon photonic chips for large-scale integrated functions. The optimized non-uniform pitches improve the coupling efficiency of single-mode fiber and waveguide by reducing the mode matching loss between the fiber and grating coupler. This kind of focusing grating coupler has a decreased transition length between the grating and single-mode waveguide.
