Abstract :
Summary form only given. Applications like micromachining or dental surgery demand stable sources of ultrashort pulses with a repetition rate of several kilohertz, millijoule energy levels and good beam quality. To this end, two MOPA systems, based on Nd:YVO/sub 4/ and Yb:YAG thin disks as amplifying medium, have been studied experimentally. The advantages of the thin disk concept for this application are the small depolarization losses and the scalability to high power.
