Abstract
A preliminary investigation of the surface strains and stresses in human tibia with and without Shaw prostheses is described. The measurements of strains and the evaluation of stresses were made for loads of 160 and 480 lb. Variation of stresses between cement and cementless joints has been determined. A three-dimensional finite-element analysis has been performed to determine the stress distribution at the interface between the implant and the bone. Measured surface strains on the tibia with and without prostheses have been correlated with the predictions of the finite-element analysis
