Abstract
The electrical, mechanical, and aerodynamic aspects of a wind turbine (WT) need to be considered when examining the impact of the mechanical dynamics of a WT on the flicker level in a wind-diesel system. The paper describes how different software packages such as TurbSim, AeroDyn, and FAST can be used to model the aerodynamic and mechanical aspects of a WT, while Simulink can be used to model the electrical parts of a WT, a diesel-generator, its controllers, the grid, and an IEEE flickermeter. Using the model developed in the paper, flicker, power, and voltage variations are observed for a turbulent wind at the WT generator terminals and conclusions about how these variations are related to mechanical dynamics are made.
