Abstract
The authors explain the basic architectural features of configuration expert systems for automation engineering. They illustrate these features with a prototype expert system for rolling mill automation and analyze the results achieved thus far. The basic features of the PLAKON expert-system shell of the TEX-K joint project are described. Finally, the authors take a look at the future development in this field.<>
