Abstract
An experimental high-speed, high-throughput packet-switching system (HPS) which can accommodate up to 10-Mb/s lines and is based on X.25 protocols is being developed. A fully distributed processing system architecture is used to achieve a high throughput of 80000 packet/s and to accommodate high-speed lines. This software-controlled system can handle various packet lengths and types such as voice, image, and data. It also provides low packet delay for voice applications and high reliability for data communication. The system architecture, network protocols, system configurations, and service applications for high-speed multimedia packet communications are described
