Abstract
The authors propose reliability objectives for the NSG (next generation switch) and offer suggestions on how these objectives might be met. The following areas for improvement are discussed: system recovery software; procedural errors (the man/machine interaction), software engineering, hardware and software module history and identification, device reliability, equipment repair parameters, use and administration of firmware, and robust design and manufacturing processes
