Abstract
Summary form only given. Successful combination of the concepts of dispersion-managed (DM) solitons with wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) would result in a considerable network capacity boost. However, WDM soliton systems suffer from frequency shifts and thus arrival time jitter induced by multiple collisions. There are two types of collisions of solitons at different frequencies, viz. at the input where solitons completely overlap and during propagation where solitons overtake each other. The former kind leads to a permanent frequency shift and thus change of velocity and linearly increasing temporal shift with propagation distance, whereas in the latter case, under certain conditions, a temporary frequency shift may relax to zero after the collision resulting only in a constant temporal shift. We study DM solitons in WDM systems using the modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation.
