Abstract :
Research and development of fiber trackers for a nu /sub mu /- nu /sub tau / oscillation experiment are in progress. In order to satisfy required specifications, i.e., a position resolution of less than 100 mu m and an effective area of 1.6*1.6 m, dopant densities of fibers have been tuned, and a computer controlled machine for the construction of multilayer ribbons of the required size has been developed. In order to make quite large area fiber trackers, the basic characteristics of fibers of 500- mu m diameter produced by Kuraray Co. Ltd. have been checked. The light yield and attenuation length of the fiber are large enough to detect minimum ionizing particles using a reflective surface whose reflectivity is at least 60% on the other end.<>
