Abstract :
The authors have reduced the size of multichannel analyzers (MCAs) and have implemented more features in hardware to relieve software requirements. They built and tested a spectroscopy grade, 4096-channel MCA. Exclusive of amplifier and power supply, it fits on two boards each approximately 7 cm by 15 cm. The authors discuss the features and performance of the analyzer and some reasonable applications of these technologies. The IAEA and EURATOM safeguards authorities need a very small, hand-held portable instrument that will acquire and display spectra. It is pointed out that the miniature-MCA technology can be readily adapted to their needs.<>
