  • Abstract
This paper presents an analysis of the coarse frequency synchronisation for a wireless OFDM system transmitting over a slow fading frequency selective channel using the WLAN mode (HIPERLAN type-2). The synchronisation technique is based on the repetition of training symbols and the accuracy of the frequency offset estimation is improved by using more than one symbol. The robustness of the full symbol repetition technique against symbol timing errors is evaluated. Novel weighting functions (exponential and Gaussian) are investigated to mitigate the detrimental effects of the signal delay variations on the correlation calculation. A significant improvement in performance was found when repetition of training symbols is employed. Additional improvement is possible at higher values of Eb/No (e.g. ~10 dB) using a weighting function. The best overall performance was achieved with symbol repetition and a Gaussian weighting function
