Abstract :
One of the major prerequisites for the support of broadband services by third generation cellular systems is access to broadband core networks such as B-ISDN. Future cellular systems will profit from the unlimited bandwidth and integrated service support capabilities of B-ISDN. This paper proposes the protocol architectures, the structure and the functions necessary for a DECT cellular system to provide access to B-ISDN while maintaining a sufficient degree of compatibility with existing cellular systems. Based on the medium to high bandwidth and the signaling versatility provided by DECT, such a system can provide high bandwidth wireless access services and constitutes a good example for future cellular systems. Furthermore, as massive investment in second generation systems makes the development and/or large scale deployment of any new RF technology commercially unprofitable, the system has a definite commercial value in the context of enhancing the service provision capabilities of existing systems (as with GPRS)
