Abstract
This paper looks at the security afforded in current telecommunications systems. Firstly the reasons for security, and the potential for exposure in present systems. Then the actual realisation ofthe security, this falls into two distinct areas. The fixed infrastructure, which offers some protection against interception and authentication based on physical links, and mobility networks that require extra protection against eavesdropping and strong authentication mechanisms
