Abstract
Urban, regional and mainline track bound transportation are in growing competition with automobile traffic. Transforming public transportation systems into commercial "business units" also has repercussions on the future developments of automatic train control systems and their operation. Recent developments in train controls from downgrading of oversophisticated solutions in regional train operations to standardization of subway control systems are discussed by selected European examples
