Abstract
Rolling mill drive trains have historically experienced premature component fatigue failures even when the perceived operating load is well below the design limit. This paper describes the study of drive train dynamics through the use of real time torque measurement on a single stand reversing mill and on a multi-stand high speed hot strip mill. The investigation led to the understanding of the root cause failure modes and provided insights into improvement of equipment reliability
