Abstract :
Rare earth permanent magnet (PM) materials are used in interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM) as mainstream motors in hybrid electrical vehicles (HEV). In mass produced HEVs, the steep rise of price for the recent rare earth materials like Neodymium, Dysprosium, Boron, and etc is one of serious concerns. Therefore, a switched reluctance motor (SRM) without permanent magnets is one of the possible candidates. Design of stator and rotor have been investigated to achieve competitive torque and efficiency profiles at same dimensions of an IPMSM used for mass production in electric and hybrid electric vehicles.
