Abstract
A high-speed program controlled multiplexing circuit (P-MUX) which software-based programming of a universal multiplexing function for efficient frame format conversion is described. Frame format conversion functions such as time slot assignment, bit rate conversion, and universal bit processing are fully programmable for the P-MUX, making it adaptable to various kinds of transmission equipment. An LSI-based implementation of P-MUX and an example of its application to transmission equipment are also described. It is shown that the LSI-based P-MUX circuit can handle high-speed signals from 64 kb/s up to 16 Mb/s
