Abstract :
A semi-Markov model of CSMA/CD (carrier-sense multiple access with collision detection) network has been developed by including the transition probabilities and state holding times (sojourn times) in the Markov chain (MC). Because of the flexibility of the semi-Markov approach, the authors have been able to utilize realistic and practical values of propagation, transmission detection, collision, packet transmission, and retransmission delays. Performance measures, including throughput, delay, mean time between collisions and mean time between safe transmissions, are evaluated for the semi-Markov process and embedded MC. Three sets of throughput and delay characteristics are obtained for 3, 16, and 50 retry limits, respectively, using a recursive algorithm to solve the chain. The analytical results are compared with the simulation results obtained with discrete event simulation
