Abstract
The authors describe an analytical approach to investigating the effect of noise correlation on trellis coded communication systems. The performance of two particular trellis codes is analyzed in the presence of coloured noise, and computer simulation results are given to confirm the analysis. They propose a swapping technique that has the ability to compensate for the performance degradation due to the effect of noise correlation. In a global context, the concept of swapping can be described as equalizing a coded signal at the transmitter in such a way that at the input to decoding the signal is intersymbol interference free and the noise is white. By doing this, the full coding gain is achieve
