Abstract
Describes the EWSD basic architecture and then elaborates on its evolution starting from its first field introduction through to the early 1990s. The implementation of some major features like Signaling System 7, ISDN and Centrex is first explained. The system evolution is then presented, focusing on subscriber line cards, peripheral redundancy and remote units, and the coordination processor. The introduction of new product lines based on EWSD technology, such as digital mobile systems and intelligent network products is discussed
