Abstract
The introduction of intelligent electronic devices (IED) in the 1980 heralded a new era in substation control and protection and substation design has evolved to use the enhanced functionality provided by these IEDs. Modern integration and automation system design reduces equipment and infrastructure costs and provides pertinent data to clients across the enterprise. This paper examines the evolution of substation design and proposes a design approach that has the potential to solve many of the current challenges facing integration and automation systems alike, by using a new generation of multi-function IED
