Abstract
Abstract-Sanitary landfill leachate disposal is one of the most necessary tasks in refuse landfill management. The most widely applied biological technology is usual the secondary stage in a combined process with additional physical-chemical pretreatment process. A novel coagulant, Poly-ferric(III)-magnesium(II)-sulfate (PFMS) was introduced to pre-treat landfill leachate and the effects of coagulation conditions on the treatment efficiencies such as PFMS dosage, leachate pH, leachate temperature were evaluated by jar-test. In addition, the treatment efficiencies of other traditional coagulants were investigated. The results indicated that the pre-treatment efficiency of the landfill leachate using PFMS was better than that using other traditional coagulants. Under the optimum conditions, COD and color removals rate can reach 65% and 88% respectively by coagulation with PFMS. Furthermore, the biodegradability of the leachate was enhanced from 0.46 to 0.68.Coagulation with PFMS greatly weaken the pollution extent of the landfill leachate, which may be applied as an efficient pretreatment step prior to biological treatment.
