Abstract
This paper presents an algorithm for designing 1-D FIR filters using genetic algorithms. We examine the usefulness of various error norms such as L2 and L∞ (minimax), and their impact on convergence rate and optimal result. We also present the application of a ternary encoding scheme applied to the filter coefficients and its effect on obtaining optimum filters. An example of a 1-D FIR filter is given using the above methodology to illustrate the usefulness and utility of the proposed technique
