Abstract
The authors provide brief overview of the architecture of the ALCATEL system and discuss design principles and the main technical choices. They then describe the different subsystems constituting the switched network, such as the subscriber subsystem and the operating and maintenance organization. Different schemes for future introduction of narrowband telecommunication services are proposed
