  • Abstract
A description is given of an eight-channel functional electrical stimulation (FES) system, suitable for the rehabilitation of the upper extremity in patients who have suffered a cerebrovascular insult, cerebral trauma, extirpation of a brain tumor, or other cerebral diseases with a clinical picture of hemiplegia. Data on system performance have been shown by clinical tests for various operating modes. The FES system can be used to improve some functional activities of the upper extremity in hemiplegia (shoulder flexion and adduction, elbow extension and flexion, wrist and finger flexion, thumb abduction, etc.) and gait in hemiplegia and paraplegia.<>
