  • Abstract
One approach for the repair of bone defects is the use of porous biodegradable scaffolds seeded with osteoblastic cells. Proliferation of these cells may be limited by diffusion rates of nutrients. Therefore, culture conditions that convect media may enhance proliferation. In addition, shear stresses associated with convection may enhance osteoblastic function of the cells. In this study four culture systems are examined: static culture, rotary vessel, spinner flask, and perfusion system. Cell density, cell distribution within the foam and osteoblastic function of seeded cells are characterized to ascertain the effect of culture systems on osteoblastic cell growth in 75:25 poly(DL-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) foams
