Abstract
This paper presents a coordinated load frequency control (LFC) scheme between the conventional LFC units and a small sized energy capacitor system with high power output. The fast charging/discharging operation is available on the ECS to balance the total power generation with the total power demand. The ECS can absorb the rapid variation of load power. However, a small sized ECS is assumed in this study, therefore, the continuous discharging operation is not available on the ECS because of its small stored energy. In addition, the continuous charging operation is not possible to hit the upper limit of the stored energy. To perform the continuous control action on the small sized ECS, the coordination from the conventional LFC unit has been proposed to keep the stored energy level of the ECS within the prespecified level. By the proposed coordination, the LFC performance is highly improved.
