Abstract :
In a world where Smart Grid is the hype, a crucial prerequisite for true "smart" transmission and distribution networks is currently missing; open standards-based communications must be available for the entire "monitoring, control and protection" chain. An open solution provides a route that allows new smart applications to be embedded in substations, networks and control centers and ensures they have access to clusters of heterogeneous power sources. By using IEC 61850 as the main technology in the Web2Energy project, linked to research regarding the use of IEC 61850 for process-bus communications, IEC 61850 and the Smart Grid are being integrated together.
