  • Abstract
A high-speed microcomputer-based data acquisition and analysis system has been designed and constructed. The primary application of the system is to measure the backscattered ultrasound energy from acoustic inhomogeneous media, such as human liver tissue. The system has been bench-tested and then tested successfully in normal operating conditions. Pattern recognition algorithms have been applied to differentiate between normal and abnormal liver cases. The reference vector consists of features extracted from the average values of the attenuation and backscattering coefficients of 25 normal liver subjects. The algorithm has been used successfully on 15 subjects with different types of liver abnormalities.<>
