Abstract :
Presents a promising feature for predicting epileptic seizures (Sz) 20 to 50 minutes prior to EEG onset. The authors calculated accumulated energy (AE) in the region of Sz onset for 13 pre-Sz and 24 baseline recordings obtained from intracranial EEG (IEEG) recordings in 3 patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) during evaluation for epilepsy surgery. In all patients pre-Sz AE deviated in a statistically significant fashion from trajectories calculated during periods far removed from Sz. Patterns of deviation differed between sleep and awake states in all patients. The authors´ results indicate that AE is a useful feature for predicting Sz in patients with MITE, and may compliment other features for Sz prediction with different time horizons
