Abstract :
This paper describes two strategies of pool dispatch and congestion management in deregulated power systems. Transmission being the limited resource in any power system, the operation of transmission system and management of congestion is becoming very vital in the restructured environment. The present industry practice is to put the transmission charges post facto i.e. after the settlement of the generations and loads, which may not be justifiable for all the participating entities. In this paper transmission charge is included in the objective function with a view to minimize the total electricity cost and also to send a price signal that will help in reducing the congestion in the system, i.e. the congestion management is built into the dispatch process. Simulation have been carried out for a number of systems and results for two systems are presented. The results show that electricity cost can be reduced by incorporating the transmission charges in the optimization process and at the same time the congestion can also be relieved.
