Abstract
This paper investigates the effect of the excitation magnetisation profile on the cogging torque of an eight pole six slot brushless machine. This type of machine is used for disc file drives. The use of 2D finite element analysis to calculate the cogging torque of a practical machine is first validated and then various magnetisation profiles are modelled. It is shown that the use of sinusoidal profiles is advantageous
