Abstract :
An optical vehicle detector is one of the most important key devices for a Universal Traffic Management System (UTMS) and it has been successfully developed. This newly developed optical vehicle detector uses near infrared light and it detects the vehicles, and is also used to communicate traffic information between the vehicle detector and the vehicle. The most characteristic difference between this newly developed optical vehicle detector and the conventional vehicle detector is not only to supply the traffic information to the driver but also to receive the driver´s information including the travel time, vehicle ID, etc., using the optical communication method, and linked to the traffic control center. The operation and features of this new optical vehicle detector for UTMS are described.
