Abstract
Trafficmaster is a commercially available congestion warning device operating in Southern England. A detailed assessment of the traffic and safety implications of the Trafficmaster system has been conducted. Techniques used include modeling, analysis of traffic statistics, questionnaires and driver logs, laboratory comprehension experiments, driving simulator studies and field trials. The network implications and network safety impacts were found to be small but some safety concerns were raised associated with distraction caused by the display. Traffic information provided by the system was found to have a number of potential beneficial uses for network management purposes.
