Abstract
A schedule-driven supervisory control structure is proposed for flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) and a formal theory, the schedule-driven supervisory control theory, is established based on Petri net models and the supervisory control theory of discrete event systems. It connects the event level control (operation control) of FMSs with production scheduling of FMSs, answers the problem of how a scheduler of an FMS affects an event level controller of the FMS, and provides a formal interface between scheduling and event level control of FMSs
